In Apparition the idea of a ‘series’ is pushed to an extreme. Essentially, a series consist of a theme and a number of variations that usually display considerable differences. Working with a black scrim, Apparition focuses on a circular form that is defined by light – sometimes filled with light, sometimes dark with a halo of light around the edge – and repeats this image many, many times with slight differences.
The repetition of so many similar images denies the importance of the subject matter and focuses the eye on the real subjects: the differences in the way the light glows, the sense of space, the way the circle’s support does or doesn’t seem to disintegrate at its base, and the texture and feeling of the scrim, with its shifting areas of light, deep shadows, and painterly marks and streaks.
As Apparition grew into a very large series, I decided that all the images dating from 2024 onward would be printed as mono prints (unique prints) so that each image will exist as a singular emanation of light.
